Ebook About Anyone who's tuned in to a White Sox game during the past four decades has heard his calls and catchphrases: "Mercy!" "Rack 'em up!" "He gone!" Ken Harrelson is a man who knows how to talk and is brimming with stories, but even the most dedicated fans haven't heard them all; many of "Hawk's" most memorable tales are simply not suitable for television broadcasts. Now, in his memoir, Harrelson opens up on a wide variety of topics, from his volatile childhood, to life in the major leagues, to stints as a professional golfer and MLB general manager, and of course his storied years in the broadcast booth. He minces no words when reflecting on brawls, blowups, and encounters with figures ranging from Mickey Mantle and Arnold Palmer to Frank Sinatra and Bobby Kennedy. Packed with the enthusiasm and candor audiences have come to expect, Hawk is a no-holds-barred look at a singular life and career.Book Hawk: I Did It My Way Review :
For the past few years I have hoped there would be a biography on the life of Ken Harrelson because I felt he had a lot of interesting experiences during his life in the major leagues as a player and as an announcer. Fortunately we now have a wonderful biography on his life in which he shares bouquets and brickbats to those he came in contact with throughout his career. The Hawk pulls no punches regarding those he had both positive and negative experiences. Alvin Dark whom others have spoken negatively gets favorable reviews from the Hawk whereas Gil Hodges, to be kind, receives not so much favor. Owner Charles Oscar Finley of the Athletics was viewed by Harrelson, along with many others, as a penny-pinching ingrate who unwittingly led to the Hawk's greatest success when Finley fired him from the team enabling Harrelson to become baseball's first big free agent by signing a lucrative contract with the Red Sox.Harrelson modeled the uniforms of the Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Indians over a nine year career. During those seasons he called several memorable individuals as teammates most notably with the Impossible Dream 1967 Boston Red Sox. The Hawk expresses considerable gratitude towards his mother, his wife who he met later in his career and got him to settle down and avoiding the numerous fights he previously took part in, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, and side kick announcers Don Drysdale, Tom "Wimpy" Paciorek, and Steve Stone. Ken's favorite announcers were Vin Scully of the Dodgers and Ernie Harwell of the Tigers. The Hawk is very appreciative and thankful for those who became a part of his life. He concludes by giving his opinions on a number of issues involving the game which you may or may not agree with. Whether you're a fan of the Hawk or not this is a very worthwhile biography to add to your baseball library. Not being a reader, I read this book in a week and a half...very easy read and well written!! Growing up in Atlanta, but spending summer vacations on the SouthSide of Chicago, I always loved watching the Sox and listening to Hawk and Wimpy with mu Dad and Gramps!! Part of what made this book so much fun to read was reading it in Hawk’s voice as if he was here telling it to me. Anyone who’s a baseball fan, but even more so a Sox fan has gotta read this book!!
